Peat free gardening?

With a little bit of influence from BBC Gardeners World, this year I am trying to be a peat free gardener. I've used up the last of the Miracle Grow and bought Homebase Peat Free instead. Already I am experiencing difficulties as many seeds have not germinated. At first I thought it might be the fault of the peat free compost.

However, it seems that the problem is a combination of over watering, slugs in the greenhouse (not helped by me not putting slug pellets down) and the cold conditions. As to whether peat free is any good - we shall see as the year progresses.
